Surviving and Thriving at Christmas with your Baby: Top Tips for Making Memories and Managing the Silly Season

Christmas is a magical time, but for parents with a baby, the season can be both incredibly special and overwhelming. The festive season brings lots of relatives, celebrations, and excitement, which can sometimes clash with a baby’s familiar patterns or routines and be exhausting.

It’s essential to find ways to make special memories while also taking care of yourselves and keeping your little one happy and calm.

Here are my top tips to help you navigate the season so you can enjoy it without burning out!

1. Keep Christmas Calm: Protect Your Baby’s Routine

  • Babies can get overtired quickly, especially with the festive buzz. If possible, try to keep key elements of their daily routine consistent, such as naps and bedtime, having some quiet feeds where they aren’t too distracted,

  • Create a designated “quiet zone” in your home or at your family’s place - a spot where you can step away from the noise if your baby needs to rest and you need some quiet.

  • Bring comforting items with you, like a favourite blanket, toy or muslins. This will help your baby feel secure even in unfamiliar environments.  Whatever you need to help you feel relaxed will in turn help your baby relax.

  • I love the Neals Yard Baby Pillow Mist, yes you read that right a baby pillow mist! Perfect for helping them unwind when things are not quite so familiar.

2. Prioritise Self-Care: Make Time for You Too

  • Accept that you don’t have to be everything for everyone. Setting boundaries with family can be helpful; let them know if you need a break or prefer shorter visits.

  • Build self-care into your festive schedule, even if it’s just a few minutes. Deep breathing, a short meditation, or some calming essential oils can help you stay grounded when things get busy. I love Lavender oil which is renowned for helping with relaxation, reducing anxiety and helping with sleep.  Pop a few drops in the bath, on a tissue or on your pillow.  Or why not have a handy Remedy to Roll to apply whenever you need moments of calm?

  • Take advantage of offers of help - whether that means a relative babysitting for a few hours or accepting pre-made food so you’re not responsible for all the cooking.

  • Thread through all my support is: Relaxed parents = happy baby.  Easier said than done I know but worth bearing in mind in the festive season.

3. Set Realistic Expectations: A Simple Christmas is Still Magical

  • This might not be the Christmas for elaborate plans, but it can be a Christmas full of love and cosy moments. Focus on simple traditions that are meaningful without being overwhelming, like singing carols or cosying up for a Christmas movie.

  • Babies love new sensory experiences, so even little things like fairy lights or soft Christmas music can create memorable moments.

  • Don’t worry about getting “perfect” holiday photos. The small, candid moments of you and your baby enjoying the day will be just as precious.

4. Protect Against Overstimulation: Take your Baby (and You) Out of the Crowd

  • Family gatherings are wonderful, but they can be too much for little ones. If your baby starts showing signs of overstimulation (like fussiness or turning away from people), take a breather.

  • Try to limit the number of people holding or interacting with your baby all at once - Explain to family members that “taking turns” can help keep your baby calm.

  • A baby carrier can be helpful if your little one needs some extra closeness to feel safe - it keeps them close to you, which can feel comforting during a busy day.

  • Take a walk around the block or if you're near nature take some time to clear your head in the trees and leaves.

5. Capture the Moments in Simple Ways

  • Don’t stress about doing a full holiday photoshoot. Snap a few pictures when your baby is calm and relaxed, and if they’re in festive pyjamas, all the better! These relaxed photos are often the ones you’ll cherish most.

  • Create a small, low-pressure keepsake from your baby’s first Christmas, like a handprint ornament or a small Christmas card with their footprint. It doesn’t need to be fancy, but it will be special to look back on.

  • Remember to get in the photos, not just be behind the camera.  There were so many days where I felt too tired but now I know my kids (and me!) would like to see me in more photos.

6. Find Quiet Joys and Connection

  • Look for little moments to soak in the holiday spirit - these can be magical even with a newborn. Reading a Christmas book, watching the Christmas tree lights together, or singing a lullaby version of a Christmas carol can be a meaningful part of the season.

  • Take time to reflect on the year - Write a short letter to your baby about their first Christmas. One day, this letter will be a beautiful reminder of this season’s memories and love.

7. Be prepared

  • If you are going away, make sure you know your local medical services, especially with the Christmas holiday opening times.

  • Remember you can contact NHS 111 24 hours a day for non emergency advice.

  • Take any medical things you may need for coughs, colds - Calpol, Nurofen [don't forget you may need them too!]

Key Takeaways for a Merry and Manageable Christmas with Your Baby:

  • Stick to the Essentials: Maintain your baby’s basic routine for better sleep and calmer days.

  • Say Yes to Help: Don’t hesitate to accept family support or pre-made food offers.

  • Capture the Small Moments: Skip the stress of big events or photoshoots - simple, quiet memories are just as precious.

  • Protect Baby (and You) from Overstimulation: Set boundaries and take breaks from big gatherings.

  • Celebrate the Season in a Meaningful, Low-Key Way: The best memories often come from the smallest joys.

Don’t stress if it all goes out of the window - naps, bedtime, weaning, whatever it may be.

Just take each day at time, quiet time when you need it and enjoy this special time.

This holiday season, give yourself permission to keep things simple and cherish these early days with your baby. With a little planning, some boundaries, and plenty of self-care, you can create beautiful memories while keeping the holiday spirit alive in your home.

I hope you have a wonderful time,
